Overview

If your child is about to start braces, you probably have a few questions. Here are the ones we hear most from parents.

Most children are ready for braces between ages 9 and 14, once enough permanent teeth have come through — though some benefit from earlier guidance appliances first. Getting braces fitted doesn’t hurt, and while there can be some tenderness for a few days afterwards, it settles quickly.

Day to day, the main adjustments are around food and cleaning. Hard and sticky foods are best avoided to protect the brackets, and brushing after meals keeps everything healthy. We’ll walk your child through all of it at their fitting appointment.

Every child is different, so the best answers always come from an assessment — but these general guidelines give you a sense of what to expect.
